Women are already dominating ESC 2024 — Have we heard our winner?

It’s quite early in the Eurovision season, but strong contenders for a potential winner have already emerged. This year’s Italian representative—Angelina Mango, with her Latin-inspired “La Noia,” has already skyrocketed to first place in current global fan rankings following her recent Sanremo victory. Mango is the first female soloist to take the stage for Italy since 2016—-but she isn’t the only woman bringing power to this year’s contest in Malmö.

Another current fan-favorite country, Ukraine, brings a strong contender for the trophy. Jerry Heil and Alyona Alyona’s song “Teresa & Maria” isn’t a simple showcase of the duo’s synergy and performance talents: Titled after Mother Teresa and the Virgin Mary, the song brings a divine energy to the stage, and a humanization of historically “holy” women, not to mention its forward, feminist message of autonomy and empowerment.

Empowerment itself seems to be an important message this year. Czechia’s Aiko, mass-winner of ESCZ 2024 by online vote, brings a strong and contrasting take on this subject. “Pedestal,” her self-described “self-love anthem,” is a fresh, pop-rock banger about learning to love oneself post-tragic relationship, and regaining power after a period of self-suppression.

Slovenian representative Raiven's dramatic and powerful track “Veronika” is a darker, yet similarly powerful ode to womanhood. The titular “Veronika” is a character embodied by desire and magic, and feels to be a symbol of connection for both Raiven herself and the audience to share in.

Finally, Nebulossa’s “Zorra,” which will be representing Spain, takes a strong stance on the double standards and expectations placed on a woman’s behavior and sexuality. Don’t be fooled by its fun and upbeat synth-pop sound—this song packs a real statement on turning criticisms around and reclaiming one’s autonomy. You can find our in-depth translation of “Zorra” here!

So, do you think one of these women will take the trophy this year—or is our winner still yet to be released? Comment your thoughts below!
